Benefits of Eating Oyster:

There are numerous advantages to eating oysters, whether raw, fried, or on the half shell. Oysters’ impressive health benefits stem from their massive stores of minerals, vitamins, and organic compounds. It could be high in trace minerals such as zinc and selenium. They can provide a significant amount of good cholesterol, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids. Because of these components, they are extremely healthy foods that can improve your body’s overall function and health.

Low in Calories

Oysters have a low-calorie count by nature. They can be beneficial as part of a weight-loss or maintenance program. On the other hand, the method of preparation determines the calorie content. When breaded, fried, or topped with tartar sauce, their calorie content skyrockets.

High in Vitamins and Minerals

Oysters are high in vitamin B12, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium. Vitamin B12 is required for the formation of red blood cells, metabolism, and the proper functioning of the central nervous system. Iron is involved in oxygen transport and metabolism, as well as neurotransmitter synthesis. Zinc is needed for immune response, cell division, cell growth, wound healing, and carbohydrate breakdown. Copper is a component of several enzymes and is required for the regulation of gene expression, connective tissue formation, cellular metabolism, and iron absorption, storage, and metabolism.

Low in Fat and Cholesterol

Oysters have a low-fat content and a moderate cholesterol level. Six oysters contain only 0.4g of saturated fat. Saturated fat and dietary cholesterol both raise blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Oysters are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain function as well as normal growth and development. They reduce inflammation and may help to prevent heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.

Good for The Environment

Unlike some fish farming operations, which can allow nonnative species to escape into surrounding ecosystems and spread disease, oyster farms can actually improve the quality of oceans and bays. This is because oysters in offshore farms consume particulate matter and nutrients that would otherwise pollute waterways. When shopping for oysters, choose farmed oysters to avoid depleting wild populations threatened by invasive crabs and snails.

Thawing Instruction for Frozen Oyster

Defrost frozen oyster in its closed shell in a plastic container or bag in the chiller section of the refrigerator at (5-10°C) for 8-12 hours. The time required for defrosting will vary from 8-12 hours depending on the refrigerator. Defrost frozen oysters in their closed shell with a sufficient amount of cold clean freshwater (water temp at 20°C, and about 4 times the volume of the oysters) for 30-40 minutes.

Simple Step to Open Oyster

Step 1:

After defrosting completely, hold the oyster by hand, with the flat shell up.

Step 2:

Defrosted oyster’s shell will have a gap between its lid and bottom shell insert a table knife or any small knife, and cut the muscle attached to the lid.

Step 3:

Pry the lid shell open with the knife and remove it.

Step 4:

Cut the muscle attached to the bottom part of the shell to fully detach the oyster.

How To Cook?

Barbeque half shell oyster is one of the easy methods to make it delicious and it is popular among Malaysians. The steps are simple as follow:

Method 1: Raw

Rinse and thaw the oysters under running water for approximately 3-5 mins. Pry open the shell by using a knife. Serve and enjoy.

Method 2: Barbeque (BBQ)

Grill frozen oysters for 8 to 12 minutes at 230°C. When the meat has softened and become pliable, drizzle with sauce.

Method 3: Oven
